Stretches for Lower Back Pain

Living with back pain can be tiresome and disruptive to your daily life. This article, medically reviewed by a physical therapist, provides 8 stretches to help relieve lower back pain. Lower back pain can be caused by changes in the lumbar structure, tightness in the hips or hamstrings, and damage to the area. Remaining physically active and stretching daily can help alleviate back pain. These stretches can be done in the comfort of your own home. We recommend finding a comfortable but supportive spot, such as a carpeted floor, with plenty of space to perform these stretches. For some of the stretches you will need a towel or blanket and a cushion (from a chair or couch) to provide extra support.

With all the stretches, be sure to breathe nice deep breaths and repeat each exercise a few times. We also recommend performing these stretches in the morning and evening and after engaging in physical activity.
