Stay Safe Outdoors

As we get into the summer months and the temperature rises, it is important to remember to stay safe when outdoors. Heat exhaustion can occur when you spend long periods of time in high temperatures, especially during physical activity and when there are high humidity levels, as is common in Georgia.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, heavy sweating, weak and rapid pulse, muscle cramps, and nausea. If you start experiencing these symptoms stop activity and move somewhere cool such as in the shade or indoors, and drink water or an electrolyte beverage. Call your doctor or emergency services if the situation worsens or does not improve. Prevent heat exhaustion by drinking cool liquids such as water and electrolyte beverages, wear sunscreen, loose fitting clothing and a hat, avoid being outdoors during the hottest part of the day, usually between 11am and 3pm, and don’t leave anyone in a parked car. Enjoy the outdoors but be sure to stay safe.
