Coffee and Caffeine

Coffee and caffeine- you may have heard conflicting information as to whether they are good for you or not. Look below at the pros and cons of coffee and caffeine and decide for yourself if it’s a healthy option for you.

PROS:
 Coffee is high in antioxidants and linked to a reduced risk of some diseases.
 Coffee contains small amounts of vitamins and minerals.
 Caffeine can enhance brain function short term which can make you feel more alert.
 Coffee drinkers may have a slightly lower risk of developing dementia and depression.

CONS:
 Caffeine is a stimulant and can disrupt sleep.
 Too much caffeine can lead to anxiousness, heart palpitations, and can make panic attacks worse in some people.
 Caffeine can raise blood pressure.
 Caffeine is addictive. Missing a few cups can cause mild withdrawal symptoms like headache, exhaustion, and brain fog.

Whether or not you choose to drink coffee or consume other caffeine containing substances (like tea, soda, or chocolate) is an individual decision. If you currently don’t drink coffee there’s no need to start now. But if you are a regular coffee drinker who is not negatively affected by caffeine, feel free to enjoy a few cups a day. Just remember not to add large amounts of extra sugar or creamers which add extra unhealthy calories and fat.
