How to Protect Yourself From the Dangers of Extreme Heat

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, extreme heat is “a period of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees for at least two to three days.” A large portion of the U.S. has been dealing with extreme heat conditions or is expected to face these temperatures soon.

Heat-related illness happens when your body can no longer regulate your temperature, and the stages of illness often progress quickly. Older adults and people with chronic conditions are especially vulnerable but taking these protective steps will help to keep you safe:

  • Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
  • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Take cool showers or baths.
  • Use your oven less to help reduce the temperature in your home.
  • If you’re outside, stay in the shade.
