NUTRITION FOR BREAST CANCER PATIENTS AND SURVIVORS

A healthy and nutritional diet can affect the immune
system in a very beneficial way but is not the only
factor. Stress management and exercise are two
important factors as well.
Although there are no foods or supplements that will
prevent any type of cancer, certain things can be
done to maintain a healthy and strong immune
system. Below are some guidelines for cancer
prevention that can be used to decrease the chance
of breast cancer recurrence.

Increase intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole
grains

Decrease overall fat intake to less than 30% of
calories

Minimize intake of cured, pickled and smoked foods

Achieve and maintain a healthy weight

Alcohol consumption should be done in moderation, if at all

It is recommended to eat 5 or more servings of fruit and
vegetables daily. Vegetables with high nutritional value include
broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, and brussel sprouts. Whole
grains are also very nutritional and good for you. Whole-grain foods
are high in complex carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Studies have shown that having a high fiber intake has positive
benefits by altering the hormonal actions of breast cancer.
Try to increase your intake of poultry, fish, and vegetarian proteins
such as legumes and lentils to limit fat intake as well as keeping a healthy body weight.
