Oral Health

Poor dental health can directly affect a person’s overall health and wellbeing. Strong and healthy teeth and gums are essential for chewing the food you need in order to stay healthy. Steps you can take include brushing twice a day and flossing at least once. You may also consider using an antiseptic mouth wash at least once a day. These habits can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

If you have dentures you will still need to care for them and your gums. Let the dentist know if your dentures don’t fit well or if you have pain or sensitivity in your gums. If possible, visit a dentist regularly. They will ask you if there are any changes in your mouth- loose or sensitive teeth, pain, sores, bleeding, bumps, or swelling. They will also check to be sure you are able to chew and swallow without pain or discomfort.

Questions you can ask the dentist include:

  • Is there anything I should change in my oral healthcare routine?
  • Do I have any conditions or is treatment needed?
  • Do I grind my teeth?
  • Should I change my diet?
  • What is your financial/payment policy? Check with the Georgia State Medicaid office to see if they cover dental visits if you are not able to afford an appointment.
