Protecting Your Eyes

As we age, our eyesight can deteriorate and we can become at risk for cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration or vision loss. Here are some ways to keep your eyes healthy.

  1. Eat well. Be sure to eat a varied diet with lots of vitamins, minerals, and key nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids. Vitamins A, C, and E, and lutein play a beneficial role in eye health. Foods such as leafy greens, avocados, citrus fruits, salmon, tuna, pork, liver, and eggs can provide these nutrients.
  2. Be careful in the sun. Wearing UV blocking sunglasses helps protect against potential damage from UV exposure.
  3. Follow the 20/20/20 rule. Staring at a computer or phone screen for long hours can strain your eyes. Be sure to take a break every 20 minutes to allow your eyes to relax and blink more.
  4. See an eye doctor regularly. Attending your annual eye check-up can help with detecting early signs of eye disease, staying on top of any prescriptions, and providing insight into other health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
  5. Quit smoking. Smoking puts you at a higher risk of cataracts and vision loss.
  6. Use safe eyewear. If you work in a hazardous environment or play a contact sport, such as squash or racquetball, be sure to wear protective goggles to avoid direct contact with materials that can damage your eyes.
