As we age, our eyesight can deteriorate and we can become at risk for cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration or vision loss. Here are some ways to keep your eyes healthy.
- Eat well. Be sure to eat a varied diet with lots of vitamins, minerals, and key nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids. Vitamins A, C, and E, and lutein play a beneficial role in eye health. Foods such as leafy greens, avocados, citrus fruits, salmon, tuna, pork, liver, and eggs can provide these nutrients.
- Be careful in the sun. Wearing UV blocking sunglasses helps protect against potential damage from UV exposure.
- Follow the 20/20/20 rule. Staring at a computer or phone screen for long hours can strain your eyes. Be sure to take a break every 20 minutes to allow your eyes to relax and blink more.
- See an eye doctor regularly. Attending your annual eye check-up can help with detecting early signs of eye disease, staying on top of any prescriptions, and providing insight into other health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
- Quit smoking. Smoking puts you at a higher risk of cataracts and vision loss.
- Use safe eyewear. If you work in a hazardous environment or play a contact sport, such as squash or racquetball, be sure to wear protective goggles to avoid direct contact with materials that can damage your eyes.
