Reducing Food Waste – Carrots and Celery

Did you know that aroundone-third of food is wasted and that households are the top contributors of wasted food? Here are some ways to store your produce so it remains fresh longer.

To store carrots and celery, submerge them in a jar of water. Storing carrots and celery in water maintains their moisture content which helps them to not dry out or go soft. For carrots, remove the stem and place them in a sealable jar or plastic bag. Fill the container with room temperature water and place in the refrigerator. Change out the water every few days until you are ready to use or eat the carrots. Be sure to wash your carrots before eating or cooking them. For celery, remove the celery leaves and trim the bottom of the stalk. Fully submerge the celery in the container of water. Use fresh room temperature water and replace the water every few days. When you are ready to eat the celery, just remove, wash, dry, and enjoy!
