As berry season approaches, there is nothing better than eating ripe juicy strawberries or plump sweet blueberries, but having them spoil a few days after you buy them is no fun. Try following these steps from the Food Network to help your berries last longer in the fridge.
- Place berries in a bowl with a vinegar solution (3 parts water to 1 part white distilled vinegar).
- Remove berries from the bowl rinse thoroughly.
- Dry the berries gently and completely with a towel.
- Store berries in large flat container with paper towels.
- Loosely cover the container so that any remaining moisture can escape. Don’t use air-tight lids.
- Store them toward the front of your fridge so they don’t become frostbitten.
If your berries are mushy but not moldy, rather than throwing them out, try adding them to smoothies or blending and adding them to lemonade or as a sauce to top ice cream.
